About the Role

The Harman EPIC Experience team provides all of Harman’s automotive brands with strong iconic User Experiences, created with understanding and respect for each brand’s DNA - based on creative innovation and technologies within acoustic, visual, UI, and material technologies and industrial design domains. EPIC drives innovation of new in-car experiences. 

In close cooperation with our business units, automakers, brand partners, and EPIC, the Principal Engineer, EPIC UX Architect will drive the creative process of conceptualizing, configuring and defining the future User Experience to be created in EPIC concept cars, and demonstrated to OEM customers to win new branded Automotive business to Harman.

What You Will Do

The Senior Engineer, EPIC UX System Architect, works on a cross functional team within Harman’s Car Audio EPIC team to innovate and create new experiences in the automotive industry. This UX System Architect will work with acoustics, UI/UX, mechanics, hardware, software, industrial design, marketing, as well as interacting with OEM customer and product management counterparts to define and define in-car experiences and their resulting system architectures and composition.

Key tasks will include identifying project, concept, and customer needs, then working with cross-functional teams to define the purpose of concept vehicle builds, and ultimately design an experience to showcase our Harman technologies and win new business. Key deliverables will include user stories, personas, and storyboards for concept builds, as well as creation of new multimodal experiences using acoustic, visual, and design expertise.

What You Will Do

  • Creative design of multisensory in-car experience using sound, light, mechanics, haptics, and more
  • Integrate with audio, software, lighting, design, and innovation teams within EPIC to receive components and systems and define user experiences
  • Define experience plans, storyboards, and interfaces for customer concepts and business pursuits
  • Document user stories and experiences and define new innovations with product teams
  • Research OEM and consumer pain points and drive innovative solutions in concept/product design
  • Work with sales and customer teams to understand and design solutions for customer needs
  • Create new brand experiences across Harman’s entire house of brands.
  • Work with project managers to define concept build scope, purpose, and desired user experience
  • Collaborate with UI and industrial designers and acoustic engineers to craft new user interfaces and experiences
  • Understand tech/features and acoustic requirements across business portfolios
  • Collaborate with internal teams within EPIC, Car Audio, Automotive, and all other divisions of Harman and Samsung
  • Collaborate with external OEMs, partners, and suppliers
  • Perform feasibility assessment of new concept architectures
  • Develop new intellectual property based on new experiences, system designs, architectures, and concepts

What You Need

  • Bachelors Degree preferred in fields such as Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Networking, Acoustics, User Experience, Human-Computer Interaction, Engineering, or similar
  • At least 5 years professional experience in research and development or similar fields listed above
  • Strong desire to learn and adapt new skills and an attitude that enjoys novel challenges
  • In addition, proven involvement in research, technology development, and cutting edge innovation
  • Experience working in the technology industry or automotive industry
  • Experience working with vehicle architectures and networking (CAN, MOST, A2B, etc) and automotive industry components
  • Knowledge of features, strengths, and weaknesses of various audio platforms and algorithm approaches
  • Ability to communicate advanced and complex concepts and ideas persuasively and concisely to all levels of the business

What is Nice to Have

  • Masters preferred in fields such as Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Networking, Acoustics, User Experience, Human-Computer Interaction, Engineering, or similar
  • 5+ years of experience is strongly preferred.
  • Experience in the following fields: system engineering, system integration, automotive networking, computer science, product development, and innovation
  • Knowledge of acoustics, sound reproduction, sound design, and sound system tuning
  • Passion for automotive experiences and technologies
  • Troubleshooting and problem solving skills
  • Knowledge of recording arts
  • Technical writing and communication skills

What Makes You Eligible

  • Be willing to travel up to 10%, domestic and international travel
  • Be willing to work from home or in an office in Novi, MI
  • Successfully complete a background investigation and drug screen as a condition of employment
  • This position requires the use of a use of a HARMAN or customer-owned vehicle.  As such, any offer of employment will be contingent upon having a clean driving record, which will be evaluated and determined in HARMAN’s sole discretion, no more than 4 active points for moving violations (issued by any motor vehicle agency), and no references to operating a vehicle under the influence of controlled substances within the last 10 years
