About the Role

Sr. Director - Global Project, Product and Solutions Engineering – Harman Embedded Audio you will be responsible for the Global Business Unit’s R&D, including Project, Product, and Solutions Engineering. As a global leader you will define and deliver Embedded Audio products and systems to all HARMAN’s global customer base spanning Americas, EMEA, Korea, China, India, APAC countries, as well as be a R&D champion of Embedded Audio business growth. This position will help drive, develop, and manage the product portfolio of the Embedded Audio team to offer differentiation and innovation across all embedded markets and offer technical expertise to internal and external customers. This position is responsible for supporting new partnerships and new business opportunities with current and new (internal and external) customers while maintaining Harman’s technical leadership in the embedded consumer markets.

Your Team

This position has direct reports based in US, China, and EU with ~60 R&D engineers, product managers and solution teams based in China, US, Europe, and Korea.


What You Will Do

  • Project Engineering: Responsible for Global Project Delivery into all regions and HEA customer segments. Own end-to-end technical customer engagements from pre-RFQ phase through production ramp up phase and ongoing technical support. Continuously evaluate engineering processes and metrics to track and measure engineering success. Ensure all engineering disciplines are designing per Harman processes and customer processes. Establish and track milestones across all active engineering projects and customer programs and manage technical resources to meet those objectives using established PLM process. Manage customer requirement, change requests, escalation, and product roadmap expectations and technical interfaces.

  • Product Roadmap and Platform Development: Define the technical strategy and roadmap for all HEA products including (not excluding): microphone, speaker, headphone, branding, software, and finished good products. Explore emerging technologies and competitive market intelligence research to drive product roadmap for the embedded audio technologies. Develop the platform strategy for the HEA products and lead the platform product development teams and the proper allocation amongst project and product engineering for customer programs. Convert product strategy into engineering deliverables. Drive engineering design quality and execution

  • Innovation: Broadly industrialize game-changing technology from the BU innovation pipeline – delivering the next generation of products to market. Own Technical and Innovation Roadmaps strategy underpinned by market and consumer research.

  • Solutions Engineering:  Create various solutions development and strategies (short/mid/long-term) to penetrate existing & new markets and customers with various product and project ranges (Early Pursuits) including providing FAE (Field Application), demo, and requirement engineering support. Provide vision and identify new business strategies and innovation areas to drive value for customers and Harman. Experience in driving and leading strategy and business model development including contract development and management with partners. Ensure implementation of formal processes to support the product development process.

  • Leadership: Face of engineering and product management to other Harman functions/BU’s, customers, and suppliers. Handle escalations within engineering and lead discussions with peers for escalations in other functions. Represent the technical voice of Embedded Audio.

  • Quotations / Budgets: Make all decisions regarding product content, budget and timing to ensure the product is on time, on-schedule, on-quality and meets all customer requirements and specifications while meeting BU profitability goals.

  • Management: Lead project and product development engineering for the Embedded Audio BU. This includes leading the engineering, and product management, requirement and solution team(s) to complete HR activities including hiring, training, evaluations, succession planning, creating development plans, and executing performance improvement plans.

  • Communication Skills: Communicate effectively, motivate, coach, and develop techno commercial excellence; is skilled at getting individuals, teams, and an entire organization to perform at a higher level and embrace change.

What You Need

  • Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Science, Information Technology or Electrical Engineering or equivalent

  • 15+ years’ experience in (B2B) project delivery engineering electronic products

  • 15+ years’ experience in (B2B) product development engineering electronic products

  • 10+ years’ experience working with a global matrixed team.

  • 10+ years management of R&D organizations

  • 10+ years product management leadership experience

  • 10+ years global customer requirement, change requests, escalation, and application experiences.

  • Proven consistent success in delivering over many product cycles, developing innovative/disruptive solutions.

  • Proven consistent success in building & maintaining high performance teams.

  • Passion for Audio quality and performance is required.

  • Ability to work with a global matrixed organization and communicate at all levels.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

What is Nice to Have

  • Master of Engineering in CS/EE, Management or equivalent

  • 10+ years’ experience in Consumer/Automotive Audio project and product delivery

  • 5+ years’ experience in Business Development or FAE customer interface background

  • 5+ years’ experience to organization transformations

What Makes You Eligible

  • Willingness to travel 50% of the time.

  • Willingness to work in an office in Shenzhen, China or Northridge, CA

  • At Harman, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $208,800 and $255,200, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
