You will join our Designer department (HUEMEN) based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands in the position of: 

Principal Industrial Designer

Joining us in this role means assuming a core team player position with the critical responsibility of shaping and executing the Harman Kardon brand design language and strategy. You'll have the unique opportunity to influence the future of audio design for the consumer market, establishing Harman Kardon as an industry leader.

As the Principal Industrial Designer for Harman Kardon, you'll be stationed at our new design studio in the vibrant city of Amsterdam. Here, you'll work aside the brand manager with a dynamic team, with key members based in our Shenzhen studio in China. This international dimension brings both thrilling challenges and opportunities, demanding effective communication and collaboration across borders.

Key Aspects of the Role:

  • Location: Our design studio is situated in the heart of Amsterdam, providing an inspiring and collaborative workspace.
  • Global Team Collaboration: You will work as a team lead with designers based in Shenzhen, China, necessitating effective overseas communication to ensure seamless collaboration and project execution.
  • Business Trips: The role will involve periodic business trips to our Shenzhen studio, offering you the chance to experience firsthand the dynamic environment of our global design operations.

About the Role:

As the Principal Industrial Designer for Harman Kardon, you will play a crucial role in shaping the visual identity and design language of our iconic audio brand. You will be at the forefront of translating Harman Kardon's rich brand values into innovative and compelling product and service offerings. Your influence will extend across a diverse range of consumer audio products, positioning Harman Kardon as a trendsetter in the industry.

Your Team:

This position will report directly to the Sr. Manager, Industrial Design, working collaboratively with a dynamic and talented multidisciplinary design team of Huemen. Your professionalism and leadership will be fundamental in promoting creativity, professional growth, and cross-functional collaboration within Harman.

What You Will Do:

  • Strategic Design Innovation: Drive the creation and execution of innovative concepts, services, and products that align with Harman Kardon's strategic goals and brand values.
  • Innovative concept development: exploring new spaces and design opportunities for Harman Kardon brand by creating groundbreaking concept designs that will drive the brand to the leading market position.
  • Team Collaboration: Close collaboration with the design team, bringing up their talents and ensuring the delivery of high-quality design solutions.
  • Project Management: Take charge of projects from inception to completion, delivering compelling presentations and maintaining effective communication with both management and team members.
  • Efficiency Enhancement: Develop and implement methods and processes to enhance team efficiency and competence levels, ensuring continuous improvement.

What you need:

  • Design Expertise: Extensive experience in designing consumer products and/or industrial goods, showcasing a strong portfolio of successful projects.
  • Brand ownership: Demonstrated ability to take ownership of the brand, ensuring consistency and alignment with brand values in all design strategies.
  • Professional Background: A seasoned professional with a minimum of 5 years' experience in product design and concept development.
  • Professional design tools: A highly skilled CAD designer proficient in Rhino Serous and Grasshopper parametric modeling tools, with the ability to create visually stunning content in Keyshot for product design proposals and storytelling.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent interpersonal, communication, facilitation, and presentation skills to effectively convey design concepts and strategies.
  • Results-Orientation: A result-oriented and motivated team player with a proactive approach to achieving goals.
  • Personal Qualities: Outgoing, passionate, and possessing an excellent sense of humor to foster a positive and collaborative work environment.
  • Language Skills: Advanced proficiency in English; proficiency in other languages is a plus.

  • Adaptability: Quick learner with self-motivation to stay abreast of industry trends and advancements.
  • Team Collaboration: Strong interpersonal skills and a team spirit to foster a collaborative and innovative design environment.
  • Industry Familiarity: Familiarity with audio products, especially in the consumer electronics industry, is preferred.
