About the Role

As the Senior Engineer, Customer Lead, you will act as primary owner for all mechanical designs of assigned projects with oversight and approval authority while acting as main customer interface. This includes creating, negotiating, and managing project vehicle integration/scope with assigned customer(s), managing mechanical aspects of loudspeaker design with a global team, customer interface/support, and lead failure analysis/problem solving efforts.

Your Team

This position will not have any direct reports. However, providing technical leadership and mentoring to less experience engineers and interns/co-ops is required.

What You Will Do

  • Single point customer interface for technical Engineering issues
    • Main Mechanical engineering interface between Harman Global Engineering team and customer
    • Explain Mechanical technical problems and solutions to the customer
    • Serve as the customer technical contact person for initial technical discussions
    • Lead customer design reviews and ensure the quality of event meets customer expectations and project timing.
    • Create and present problem solving documents to the customer (5 Phase, Fishbone, Is/Is Not)
    • Lead Harman Mechanical technical discussions during customer open issue meetings
  • Interface between internal Harman Mechanical and Transducer Engineering departments
    • Oversees projects from a technical perspective and intervenes to insure customer and internal requirements are met
    • Track internal Mechanical and Transducer development status to insure on time delivery to the customer
    • Work with global Mechanical and Transducer departments to manage technical risks to insure on time delivery to customer
    • Supports and facilitates resolutions of technical difficulties/problems e.g. by involving the appropriate subject matter experts.
    • Lead design reviews
    • Responsible for coordinating customer requested technical changes
  • Coordinate and lead application/integration of early concept and pre-development activities with customer(s)
  • Support customer(s) RFQ activities for mechanical integration
  • Analyze speaker assemblies and their subcomponents as created by global mechanical design team with consideration to Customer requirements
  • Lead the creation of DFMEA/DRBFM outline and insure global engineering teams complete documents with a high level of quality and present them with customer
  • Track internal design review open issues to successful completion
  • Prepare Harman CAD (CATIA) for upload to customer CAD database using NX
  • Travel to Harman, customer, and supplier facilities, as necessary
  • Travel periodically to support program reviews, training, etc., including some international travel

What You Need

  • BSME, or related degree
    • Additional experience may be substituted for education and vice-versa
  • 5+ years of Mechanical Engineering design experience in automotive, electronics, and/or acoustics
  • Working Knowledge of:
    • CATIA and NX
    • GD & T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerance)
    • DFMEA (Design Failure Mode & Effects Analysis)
    • DVP & R (Design validation Plan & Report)
    • FEA (Finite Element Analysis) and other predictive simulation tools
    • Plastic Injection Molding, metal stampings, die castings
    • Problem Solving Methodologies (8-D, PHASE-5 test reporting, Fault Tree Analysis, Fish Bone Analysis, etc.)
    • Speaker and/or Electronic components and assemblies
    • Automotive component integration

What is Nice to Have

  • PMP (Project Management Professional) training
  • Automotive requirement and procedures (APQP / PPAP)
  • ANSYS, and SAP Training
  • Experience working with PLM and PDM systems
  • Experience working as an Audio Engineer with automotive OEM’s
  • Customer / supplier negotiations and interfaces
  • New product launches and quality support
  • Experience working within a global matrixed organization and ability to communicate at all levels
