About the Role

This position is for a Principal Mechanical Engineer with 10 or more years of mechanical design experience. The position requires a self-motivated individual with a strong desire to succeed/excel. Primary responsibilities will include thermal system design and simulation as well as system level mechanical design. As a Principal Engineer the candidate is expected to take a leading role in design decisions and development.


What You Will Do

Responsibilities:

  • Thermal system design and simulation including packaging of power electronics and thermal optimization.
  • Mechanical design and documentation of power amplifiers including but not limited to sheet metal, injection molded plastics, aluminum extrusions, electrical-mechanical interfaces, sheet metal painting techniques (powder coat), mylar overlays with adhesives, utilizing 3D mechanical modeling techniques and simulation tools.
  • Material selection for all mechanical parts within power amplifiers (aluminum heat sinks vs. copper, mylar vs. polycarbonate plastics, adhesive specification for regulatory compliance, etc.).
  • Mechanical design and documentation for EMC including but not limited to Faraday shielding, ferrite specification, system grounding as it relates to mechanical interfaces.
  • Mechanical design and documentation for system regulatory compliance.
  • Mechanical design and documentation for manufacturing assembly processes (DFM).
  • Mechanical validation testing including but not limited to thermal cycling, drop testing, and vibration testing.

What You Need

  • B.S. in Engineering (M.S. preferred) and a minimum of 10 years applicable working experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience with IcePak or other thermal modeling software, as well as iteration of designs for optimization.
  • Thermal design experience related to power semi-conductors for both natural and forced air convection, including thermal interfacing and spreading.
  • Experience with Unigraphics, SolidWorks or other 3D CAD software and Master Model techniques.
  • Experience with various manufacturing processes, including extrusions, injection molding, sheet metal, and machining.

What is Nice to Have

  • Experience designing high power electronics
  • Practical knowledge of EMI materials and challenges involved in the design of enclosures for EMI compliance.
  • Interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.

  3. Principal Engineer

    Principal Engineers are recognized as an emerging expert. They lead the conceptualization, design, implementation and testing of technologies, tools, or process while consistently demonstrating technical expertise and ingenuity. They demonstrate the ability to plan, define, and execute projects with no supervision. Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree + 12 years’ experience.

  4. Senior Principal Engineer

    Recognized as a technical expert, Senior Principal Engineers consistently demonstrate high levels of technical expertise, ingenuity and creativity. They develop and apply advanced technologies, engineering principles, theories and concepts, and have broad knowledge about the design and operation of systems outside of their specialty. Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree + 16 years’ experience.

  5. Distinguished Engineer

    A Distinguished Engineer has a strong record of creativity and innovation. They advance engineering principles, theories and concepts, and are recognized as a Company-wide authority in one or more technical areas. Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree + 20 years’ experience.

  6. Fellow

    A Fellow is an industry recognized expert with a significant body of peer reviewed research and journal publications and frequently speaks at conferences. Acts as a HARMAN ambassador. Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree + 25 years’ experience.

  7. Senior Fellow

    A Senior Fellow is the most accomplished of an elite group of engineers, widely recognized as a World renowned expert in their field of expertise. Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree + 30 years’ experience.
