About the Role
As the a Principal Audio Signal Processing Research Engineer you will work in our HARMAN X team. HARMAN X is the research division that focuses on advanced technology development that supports all Harman product lines, including Automotive, Lifestyle (consumer), and Professional.
You will have strong analytic skills with the technical depth to understand underlying acoustic & signal processing principles. Leverage your background in machine learning, optimization techniques, and past exposure to the audio industry in order to understand what matters to the consumer. Have the opportunity to use your imagination and vision to see what hasn’t been done before in order to create better and new experiences. You will work within a broader team of researchers but help drive projects to defined conclusions.
What You Will Do
Use signal processing and machine learning to invent and mature new technologies related to automobiles, headphones, single or multi channel speaker systems, microphones, speech systems and beyond.
Design audio systems and/or audio algorithms that measurably deliver breakthrough experiences and work with the broader team to build proof-of-concept demonstration systems
Evangelize technologies developed by the Audio Systems team with internal Business Units and Engineering organizations
Make the appropriate trade-offs to enable productization of technologies to mass production scale
Evaluate existing technologies for market readiness through benchmarking
Transfer new technologies to commercialization teams
Write reports, white papers, and patent applications
What You Need
Bachelor’s degree in signal processing related discipline: physics, acoustics, music technology, computer science, electrical engineering etc.
12 years of relevant acoustic science/engineering industry experience
Theoretical understanding of acoustic systems (microphones, headphones, single or multi-channel loudspeakers, etc.) and signal processing algorithms
Demonstrated knowledge of machine learning algorithms and techniques with applicability for real world problems
Prior experience on optimization techniques applied across complex, loosely structured data
Experience with acoustical test and measurement methods & tuning
Experience with acoustical data analysis using MATLAB, Python, C++ or equivalent
Ability to work in a global matrixed organization and communicate at all levels
Ability to independently tackle projects related to audio system design, audio algorithms, and novel testing methodology
What is Nice to Have
Master’s degree with 8 years experience or PhD with 4 years experience is preferred
Practical experience with audio and voice processing algorithms and noise cancellation techniques is preferred
Advanced algorithm experience such as beamforming arrays, immersive audio, audio up mix, HRTF processing, machine learning methods, etc.
Audio prototyping and demo experience for consumer, professional or automotive applications
Experience with data science and machine learning
Experience creating VSTs or other real-time audio processing prototyping
DSP/GPU experience and use of Tensor Flow/PyTorch

An entry level role, the degreed Engineer knows and applies basic concepts and techniques of the profession under direct supervision and guidance. Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree
A Senior Engineer provides a wider variety of technical support tasks using a combination of advanced engineering principles and techniques. They operate with little guidance/supervision as Subject Matter Experts (SME) in their defined area of specialization. Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree + 5 years’ experience.
Principal Engineers are recognized as an emerging expert. They lead the conceptualization, design, implementation and testing of technologies, tools, or process while consistently demonstrating technical expertise and ingenuity. They demonstrate the ability to plan, define, and execute projects with no supervision. Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree + 12 years’ experience.
Senior Principal Engineer
Recognized as a technical expert, Senior Principal Engineers consistently demonstrate high levels of technical expertise, ingenuity and creativity. They develop and apply advanced technologies, engineering principles, theories and concepts, and have broad knowledge about the design and operation of systems outside of their specialty. Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree + 16 years’ experience.
A Distinguished Engineer has a strong record of creativity and innovation. They advance engineering principles, theories and concepts, and are recognized as a Company-wide authority in one or more technical areas. Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree + 20 years’ experience.
A Fellow is an industry recognized expert with a significant body of peer reviewed research and journal publications and frequently speaks at conferences. Acts as a HARMAN ambassador. Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree + 25 years’ experience.
A Senior Fellow is the most accomplished of an elite group of engineers, widely recognized as a World renowned expert in their field of expertise. Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree + 30 years’ experience.
