Position Summary

This position is within HARMAN’s Professional Division, based in Shenzhen Development Center (SDC). Supervisory Responsibilities

This position does not have any direct or indirect reports. 



Job Responsibilities:


This engineer will work in a collaborative environment to create audio products designed for global markets for Harman Professional. The engineer will be responsible for driving mechanical development and implementing mechanical designs as part of a project team.


  • Work closely with Industrial Design teams to create elegant, functional, manufacturable, and cost-effective mechanical designs.
  • Study competitive and consumer products to apply new and cutting-edge processes to Harman designs.
  • Organize the relevant internal and external technical teams to execute design reviews prior to tooling.
  • Provide cost and lead time estimates for tooled parts.
  • Communicate with associated technical and management teams on product design requirements.
  • Manage deliverable schedule and design time to meet product deliver, cost, quality, and reliability requirements.
  • Approve and validate all mechanical parts using a sample build process.
  • Provide technical reports on aspects of development specific to mechanical engineering discipline.
  • Process all documentation into Document Control system following internal product development process.
  • Travel to vendors and contract manufacturers to review assembly and quality procedures.
  • Mentor and develop junior engineering talent.



Basic Qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, MSEE preferred.
  • 8+ years experience designing consumer and commercial products.
  • Excellent understanding of mechanical costs, including tooling, mechanical part prices, and various manufacturing processes.
  • Expertise in the use of mechanical design software tools such as Solidworks.
  • Deep appreciation for design for manufacturing (DFM) and the ability to create designs that are elegant, yet easy to manufacture.
  • Deep experience with design and manufacturing of metal & plastic parts.
  • Deep understanding of manufacturing and assembly processes for mechanical components.
  • Proven delivery of thoughtful and successful product designs.
  • Strong knowledge of metal chassis, die casting, extrusions, and thermal design.
  • Excellent mathematical and analytical skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • The ability to work on multiple projects in a fast-paced environment with minimum supervision.
  • Highly skilled in root cause analysis techniques.
  • Strong teamwork, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a matrix organization with multiple stakeholders.
  • Ability to react quickly and accurately to changes in program and design directions while maintaining challenging delivery schedules.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Professional-level written and elementary verbal English skills.



Preferred Qualifications & Desired Competencies:


  • Master’s degree or PhD in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Fluency in written and oral English.
  • Expertise in thermal analysis and design.
  • Experience working with ODMs.
  • Key contributor to multiple successful consumer products.
  • Expertise in FEA tools.
  • Expertise in IEC 60065 and other international safety standards.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Willingness to travel locally 10% of the time.
  • Willingness to work in Shenzhen, PRC.
  • Willingness to submit to a background screen and a drug test.
