Senior Manager, Mechanical

The Senior Manager will lead a group of 4-12 mechanical engineers, working in a collaborative environment to create audio, video, and lighting products designed for global markets for Harman Professional. The Senior Manager will be responsible for driving a team of mechanical engineers to development and implementing mechanical designs, including hands-on design work.


  • Assign and supervise mechanical resources to execute Harman products.
  • Set individual and departmental goals and provide performance reviews for direct reports.
  • Manage deliverable schedules and design times to meet product delivery, cost, quality, and reliability requirements.
  • Maintain and grow engineering staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training employees.
  • Mentor direct reports and provide challenging assignments to grow individual and team skills.
  • Develop and refine departmental workflows, tools, and processes to continuously improve time-to-market, product quality, and innovation.
  • Work closely with Industrial Design teams to create elegant, functional, manufacturable, and cost-effective mechanical designs.
  • Provide mechanical solutions that meet “design to cost” targets.
  • Study competitive and consumer products to apply new and cutting-edge processes to Harman designs.
  • Organize internal and external technical teams to perform design reviews prior to tooling.
  • Provide cost and lead time estimates for tooled parts.
  • Communicate with technical and management teams to refine product design requirements.
  • Travel to vendors and contract manufacturers to review assembly and quality procedures.
  • Mentor and develop engineering talent.



Basic Qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, MSEE preferred.
  • 3+ years leading mechanical engineering teams.
  • 8+ years experience designing consumer and commercial products.
  • Professional-level written and verbal English skills.
  • Excellent understanding of mechanical costs, including tooling, mechanical part prices, and various manufacturing processes such as sheet metal, plastics, extrusions, cast, laser and die cutting, etc.
  • Expertise in the use of mechanical design software tools such as Solidworks.
  • Deep appreciation for design for manufacturing (DFM) and the ability to create designs that are elegant, yet easy to manufacture.
  • Deep experience with design and manufacturing of metal & plastic parts.
  • Deep understanding of manufacturing and assembly processes for mechanical components.
  • Proven delivery of thoughtful and successful product designs.
  • Strong knowledge of metal chassis, die casting, extrusions, and thermal design.
  • Excellent mathematical and analytical skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • The ability to work on multiple projects in a fast-paced environment with minimum supervision.
  • Highly skilled in root cause analysis techniques.
  • Strong teamwork, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a matrix organization with multiple stakeholders.
  • Ability to react quickly and accurately to changes in program and design directions while maintaining challenging delivery schedules.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
