Principal Engineer, Systems

Position Summary:

Harman is looking to hire the most passionate, innovative and driven engineers on the planet to drive the next generation of control (controllers, user interfaces, endpoints) products. The successful candidate will have demonstrated success with product development experience and products in the market that shows awareness, competence and understanding of high-level concepts. This individjual will secure the conformance, completeness and integrity of the design with respect to the product requirement specification. Act as the project managers technical lead to ensure progress and risks are balanced with time/scope/budget requirements.


Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position does not have any direct reports.  However, principal-level engineers are expected to exhibit strong technical and leadership skills and mentor more junior engineers to help guide their careers and activities.


Job Responsibilities:

The Principal Systems Engineer is responsible for the entire product development seen from a technical engineering point of view ensuring that the product requirement specification is created and understood; that integration of systems, platforms and technologies is managed; that product development is executed with attention to interfaces and detail with internal engineers and external suppliers; that test and verification activities are suffient, managed and evaluated; and that product data is managed correctly enabling smooth transition into manufacturing.

Futhermore the Systems Engineer must support the Project Manager in ensuring that the project is progressing according to plan while at the same time managing technical risk that may affect the project schedule.

  • Work with product teams to define all criteria for products, accessories and software: use cases, specifications, definitions, cost targets, time lines and deliverables.
  • Ensure that the product requirement specification is created, understood and fullfilled.
  • Ensure that product development and integration is implemented in cooperation between internal and external stakeholders.
  • Identify, assess, and control technical risks at product level.
  • Work with engineering groups to implement corrective actions when needed
  • Communicate closely and transparently with project manager, product manager, development engineers (mechanical, electrical, software, test/quality), manufacturing engineers, and JDM/ODM/OEM suppliers.
  • Support delivery of products to the market on time, scope, cost, and quality.
  • Support qualification of external suppliers (manufacturing and JDM/ODM/OEM).
  • Offer support to colleagues throughtout the Harman Pro division.


Basic Qualifications:

  • BS or MS in engineering.
  • 5+ years experience in development of electro-mechanical products.
  • 3+ years experience with protocol definition or implementation.
  • 3+ years experience with networking: Ethernet, TCP/IP, Wi-Fi, Zigbee, or similar.
  • Analytical and pro-active decision making.
  • Positive team builder with excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively within a fast paced, results oriented, matrix environment.
  • Ability to self-motivate, make decisions quickly, and follow scientific methods.
  • Fluent in English speech and writing.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with JDM/ODM/OEM suppliers.
  • Experience as Systems Engineer/Technical Lead or Training/Certification in Systems Engineering.
  • Knowledge of network topologies, and networking protocols.


Eligibility Requirements:

  • Willingness for occasional travel to other Harman Pro development centers.
  • Willingness to work in an office in Shenzhen, China.
