Principal Engineer, Hardware 2

Job Responsibilities

This engineer will work in a collaborative environment to create audio, video, and lighting products designed for global markets for Harman Professional.  The engineer will be responsible for driving daily hardware development activities as part of a project team. Additionally, there will be assignments for department systems and processes that advance engineering efficiency, communications, and data management.

  • Design electronic hardware for professional audio, video, and lighting products, owning the design through the complete lifecycle of the product.
  • Design reference schematics and layout implementations for circuits such as mixed-signal, low-noise analog, microphone preamplifier, class A/B and Class D amplifiers, LCD displays, and wireless connectivity and communications.
  • Work with internal Harman groups and external suppliers to select key electrical components including microprocessors, AD/DA/CODECs, DSPs, SOCs, amplifier chips, FPGAs, ASICs, USB, and other key electrical components.
  • Select electrical components that meet cost, performance, delivery, and reliability requirements.
  • Lead the hardware design activities for assigned programs to ensure that products meet HARMAN specifications and that program milestones are achieved.
  • Work with NPI, operations, and CMs/ODMs to ensure hardware designs meet world-class design for manufacturing (DFM) standards.
  • Prepare and maintain specifications, schematics, BOMs, and related documentation during development.
  • Provide guidance, review, and support to PCB layout team.
  • Organize and lead peer-based schematic and PCB layout design reviews.
  • Manage the electrical production BOM's.  Update & Release BOM's using Harman's configuration management & PLM systems.
  • Design, analyze, specify, and characterize electrical circuits and determines their performance characteristics using SPICE, Sabre, Hyperlynx, and other engineering CAE analysis tools.
  • Actively work to minimize the number of components in designs.  
  • Participate in a product team environment, supporting other team functions: software, mechanical, process, test, and quality engineering.
  • Lead circuit design and analysis, simulation, and DFMEA to ensure the design meets requirements.
  • Troubleshoot/debug HW using a variety of industry standard or in-house developed tools and test equipment.
  • Provide after-shipment service and troubleshooting support for high-rate warranty and field failures.
  • Mentor engineers on team.


Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.
  • Expertise in mixed-signal embedded HW design, specifically: analog and digital interfaces like SPDIF, LVDS, USB, switching and linear power supplies.
  • Demonstrated prior experience bringing an embedded product from concept to production.
  • 5+ years experience with schematic capture and layout tools, circuit simulation tools, and signal integrity simulation software.
  • Expertise in design for EMC mitigation, memory interfaces like DDR, and board-level IC interfaces like SPI, MLB, I2C, and I2S.
  • Familiar with Class AB, Class H and Class D amplifier output topologies.
  • Expertise with hardware debugging and validation test equipment, including logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, and Audio Precision.
  • Deep understanding of high-speed design techniques, including noise/ringing reduction, terminations, EMC mitigation, crosstalk, PCB routing, and signal measurement.
  • Clear understanding of physics in electronics circuits, including inductance, capacitance, magnetics, and electromagnetic radiation.   
  • Experience interfacing with management and explaining complex technical issues.
  • Clear and logical thought process.
  • Strong understanding of electronics manufacturing processes and methods.
  • Professional-level written and elementary verbal English skills.


Preferred Qualifications & Desired Competencies:

  • MSEE or PhD preferred.
  • 6+ years of C/C++ or other structured language.
  • Fluency in written and oral English.
  • Ability to calculate and measure noise signals in analog systems.
  • Expertise in selecting the proper capacitor composition and values for use in audio, bypassing, and power filtering.
  • Software and Linux development experience a plus.
  • Strong interest in music, including recording music, mixing live music, or playing a musical instrument.
