Position Summary:

Principal Engineers lead the conceptualization, design, implementation and testing of technologies, tools, or processes while consistently demonstrating technical expertise and ingenuity.   They demonstrate the ability to plan, define, and execute projects with no supervision.  They are recognized throughout the Division as an emerging expert.

In this role the successful candidate will help author and invent the next generation of audio and video hardware and software. Leveraging technology trends and their own expertise, the successful candidate will disrupt both cost and user experience to lead the professional audio industry.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position has no direct supervisory responsibility, but will help contextualize technical career opportunities for peers and junior talent as well as serve as a mentor to junior members of the team.

 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Plan, organize, execute and monitor all aspects of projects to achieve commitments for delivery, performance, and financial requirements
  • Lead technical discussions with customers to ensure requirements are met and customer is satisfied
  • Prepare documents and reports with cross functional teams for engineering and program management along with participating in design reviews with customers and engineering peers
  • Design and conduct test programs that support project initiatives
  • Ensure product meets customer and internal requirements, specifications, and cost targets
  • Conduct research and development for new technologies and products
  • Research and review competitive products, technologies, and intellectual property
  • Ensure that potential intellectual property is fully researched, documented, and protected
  • Release and maintain controlled documents as required

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field and 4 years of experience in corporate or academic research; alternatively, Master’s Degree in above mentioned fields and 8 years of experience in research and development or Bachelor’s Degree and 12 years’ experience
  • Expert in at least one of the following fields: Power Electronics, Thermal System design for electronics
  • Experience with Unigraphics, SolidWorks or other 3D CAD software and Master Model techniques.
  • Exceptional reputation as an innovator based on having created forward looking research, projects, and award winning publications
  • Proven technical leadership
  • Experience with the use of rapid prototyping tools for software and hardware, electronics, and mechanical design for consumer electronics and future device platforms
  • Ability to communicate advanced and complex concepts and ideas persuasively and concisely to all levels of the business
  • Mechanical design and documentation of electronics including but not limited to sheet metal, injection molded plastics, aluminum extrusions, electrical-mechanical interfaces, utilizing 3D mechanical modeling techniques and simulation tools.
  • Thermal system design and simulation including packaging of power electronics and thermal optimization.
  • Mechanical design and documentation for system regulatory compliance.
  • Mechanical design and documentation for manufacturing assembly processes (DFM).
  • Mechanical validation testing including but not limited to thermal cycling, drop testing, and vibration testing.
  • Interface with electrical engineers, manufacturing engineers, contract manufacturers, procurement, off-site engineers, vendors, etc. during the design process.
  • Hold peer-based mechanical design reviews and document / report design aspects, test results, and project timelines to management.
  • Analyze field failures for mechanical design or manufacturing defects.
  • Manage and optimize cost structure and quality / reliability of all mechanical parts within the design.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous Professional or Consumer Audio/Video experience
  • Experience with IcePak or other thermal modeling software, as well as iteration of designs for optimization.
  • Experience with various manufacturing processes, including extrusions, injection molding, sheet metal, and machining.
  • Material selection for all mechanical parts within power amplifiers (aluminum heat sinks vs. copper, mylar vs. polycarbonate plastics, adhesive specification for regulatory compliance, etc.).
  • Mechanical design and documentation for EMC including but not limited to Faraday shielding, ferrite specification, system grounding as it relates to mechanical interfaces.
  • Thorough knowledge of materials, particularly related to corrosion and dissimilar metallurgy.
  • Experience with metal fabrication, paints, tooling, and tolerances involved.
  • Ability to design and conduct real world tests for thermal and mechanical integrity.
  • Fundamental understanding of manufacturing process flow and design for manufacture.

 

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Willingness to travel 5-10% of the time domestic and international.
  • Willingness to work in an office.
