Principal Engineer - Linux Embedded Development and Audio Solutions

Job Responsibilities:

  • Perform technical research and evaluations in all areas of embedded Linux systems development.
  • Develop and integrate audio systems in an embedded Linux environment.
  • Designing, writing and debugging code in C/C++ and other languages as needed.
  • Linux Kernel development and build systems (e.g. Yocto)
  • Understanding of the interaction between hardware and the Linux Kernel and how to develop interfaces between software and hardware
  • Evaluate and develop new embedded platforms for areas such as: augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR), 3D-audio playback and recording, multi microphone and multi speaker arrays and voice control interfaces.
  • Familiar with Cloud-based service for faster prototype development
  • Actively enhancing Harman's IP portfolio with project-related IP.
  • Monitoring current trends and changes in technology, including the state of the art innovations in your area of expertise.
  • Transfer of developed technologies to business units for commercial product deployment.
  • Conduct feasibility studies.  Presentations and technical demonstrations.
  • Collaborate with peers inside and external to HARMAN, both in the local office and in facilities globally.


Basic Qualifications: List the minimum and desired education (including degrees, licenses, certification or registrations) and experience needed to perform the key responsibilities of the position.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Math or related field.
  • 8+ or more years of experience in embedded Linux development.
  • Ability to lead a team of engineers
  • Experienced with C/C++ language programming
  • Experience with Python, JavaScript, bash scripting
  • Ability to implement audio solutions in Linux environment
  • Demonstrated expertise in Linux build systems including Yocto
  • Experience with ALSA, GStreamer, PulseAudio
  • Experience in Cloud computing
  • Demonstrated expertise in development of hardware drivers
  • Demonstrated expertise with networking protocols including IP, UDP, TCP, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth
  • Experienced working within an Agile development framework.
  • Strong attention to detail.


Preferred Qualifications: Please list the preferred qualifications needed for this position based on the following:

  • Master’s degree Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Math or related field.
  • Experience in Linux application development
  • Experience in networked audio transports such as Wi-Fi, AVB/TSN, AES67
  • Ability to operate hardware level diagnostic tools (Oscilloscope, Logic Analyzer, etc.)
  • Passion for audio and music.

  • Willingness to travel up to 10% of time.
  • Willingness to work in Richardson TX office.
