Position Summary:

This position is within HARMAN’s Lifestyle Automotive Acoustics’ Mechanical Engineering department, located in Novi, MI. The Acoustics’ Mechanical Engineering team is looking for the ultimate team player and positive thinking, customer satisfying person.  The Successful candidate will have a demonstrated track record of success with mechanical engineering and customer facing interaction.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position does not have any direct or indirect reports.

 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Lead the integration aspects of HARMAN’s new product development programs at the customer’s site.
    • Convey HARMAN design requirements to the customer, including reserving packaging space for speakers, enclosures and amplifiers.
    • Interact with the customer’s various engineering organizations, such as audio, infotainment, body-in-white, trim, instrument panel, wiring, electrical, system integration, EMC, bus communication and the design studio.
    • Create simple 3D CAD engineering models (Unigraphics NX) of mechanical packaging concepts.    Provide these models to our customer and to design engineering teams.
    • Create customer drawings for release into customer Teamcenter
  • Communicate customer design direction and changes to the HARMAN design team, including program management, transducer and amplifier engineering, and sales.
    • Facilitate the transfer of CAD files, specifications, change requests, roll-out plans, software tools, etc., between the customer and HARMAN using data exchange systems as necessary; engineering, software engineering and as appropriate, sales and quality personnel.
    • Review packaging models with the customer and the HARMAN development team.
    • Coordinate the communication of related design documentation between the customer and HARMAN, such as; specifications, GD&T requirements, connector pin-out definitions, communications protocols and wiring diagrams.
    • As necessary, track and release engineering change requests in customer PLM system.
  • Chair and/or attend customer meetings as HARMAN’s engineering representative.  Coordinate meeting assignments with fellow Resident Engineers, as necessary.  Provide immediate feedback to the appropriate HARMAN personnel. 
    • Early system packaging meetings
    • Audio system open issue meeting (PDT)
    • Component packaging reviews
    • Design/Peer reviews at the concept, prototype, and production stages of development
    • Issue-resolution reviews following customer builds at the concept, prototype, and production stages of development
    • Pilot reviews and launch-readiness meetings
  • Review sample parts (concept-, prototype- and production-level) with the customer for immediate feedback.
    • Verify integration of components in concept-, prototype- and production-level vehicles.
    • Compare customer and HARMAN components against CAD models, specifications and drawings.
  • Report and negotiate engineering specifications with the customer.
  • Assess the customer’s mindset.  Report substantial changes in the customer’s (Engineering, Purchasing, Quality, Manufacturing, etc.) perceptions of HARMAN’s performance to Engineering and Sales management.
  • Assist HARMAN Sales personnel in supporting the customer, as necessary.
    • Communicate all commercial issues by the customer to the appropriate HARMAN Sales personnel.  All cost and price related discussions are the responsibility of HARMAN Sales personnel.
    • Forward information on customer and competitor activities relevant to HARMAN’s interests.
    • In the event that HARMAN is a Tier 2 supplier, coordinate communications and meetings with the Tier 1 suppliers regarding engineering design and integration issues.  On occasion, with prior agreement, in the absence of HARMAN sales personnel, negotiate topics such as part delivery, shipping, packaging and product labeling with the Tier 1 supplier.
    • In the absence of the HARMAN Sales personnel, accompany the customer on HARMAN facility visits.
    • Review these and similar activities with fellow Resident Integration Engineers.
  • Create and release appropriate Harman and customer engineering documentation.
  • Travel periodically to support program reviews, training, etc., including some international travel. 
  • Review assignments with fellow Resident Engineers, as required.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • Education:
    • BSME, BSMET or other degree with related experienced.
    • Work experience beyond the minimum experience requirement may be an acceptable substitute for engineering degree.
  • Experience:
    • 5+ Years experience in OEM automotive product design (plastics, sheet metal, etc)
    • Unigraphics NX CAD design skills or equivalent in other CAD software
    • Experience using PLM tools, especially TeamCenter
  • Working Knowledge:
    • In-Depth understanding of the automotive product design and development process
    • Knowledge of the APQP process

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Education:
    • Advanced degree, e.g. MSME, MSMET or MBA.
  • Experience:
    • Experience working as an Audio Resident Engineer with North American OEM’s
    • Experience working as a Resident Engineer or Design and Release engineer
    • Advanced experience using Unigraphics NX
    • Experience with the automotive OEM vehicle development process for OEMs such as Chrysler, Ford, GM, or Toyota
    • Experience using other CAD tools, especially Catia V5
  • Working Knowledge:
    • Previous audio design experience
    • Packaging components into automotive vehicles and systems
    • Experience using MS Office s/w, especially Excel and PowerPoint

 

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Willingness to travel 10% of the time.
  • Willingness to work in an customer office in Aubun Hills, MI for the majority of work time, some work in local Harman office in Novi, MI.
