Position Summary: 

The Center of Competency (CoC) User Experience Group is seeking a Sr. Manager, Optics HUD to work under the leadership of Director of Engineering, CoC User Experience (UX). We are a fast-paced, start-up-feel group of talented inventors, engineers, researchers, and designers located in Novi, MI reporting directly into the Connected Car Division. The team aims to be the most forward-thinking group in the company and is focused on leveraging future User Experiences (UX), connecting the dots between cutting-edge technologies and deep research, and rapid end-to-end prototyping, and bringing that into products. Every day, we challenge ourselves to turn Science Fiction into reality. This role would be SME (Subject Matter Expert) and group manager for Optics and AR Heads-Up Display (HUD) within Harman and strongly influence the product roadmap definition.

 

Job Responsibilities:

 

  • Responsible for management of the Optics and HUD technical engineering teams within the overall UX/UI product roadmap.
  • Working with the assigned CBU counterparts, open new customer opportunities including RFQ pursuits in legacy and new customer accounts.
  • As the subject matter expert and Optics specialist for HUD and Instrument Cluster groups, this role will work closely with the Customer Business Units (sales) and RFQ teams to support the creation of proposals in response to RFI's, RFQ's and RFP's for displays and UX solutions.
  • Work closely with customer engineering teams to understand requirements, influence the customers’ technical direction and to build confidence in Harman’s products and product delivery capabilities.
  • Develop functional and technical specifications to include effective product and user interface design and rapid prototyping.
  • Manage RFQs, while ensuring that the product strategy is adhered to throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Work with the Marketing and Product Management teams to create collateral that can be utilized in a lead generation programs (trade shows, workshops, videos, white papers, etc). Assemble such programs to facilitate account penetration and an active network.
  • Responsible for ensuring product meets customer and internal requirements, specifications and cost targets.
  • Provide preprogram support with quick turn designs/samples and technical documentation as required.
  • Prepare documents and reports with cross-functional teams for engineering and program management along with participating in design reviews with customers and engineering peers. Manage product timelines to meet overall project goals.
  • Lead HUD realization of customer requirements and specifications (RFC, RFI, RFQ), product test plans, and production QA processes as needed to ensure the development and manufacture of quality products.
  • Support cross-functional teams and projects on optics design support.
  • Measure Optical performance of HUD and assist on SAE regulation creation.  Mentor Design Engineers in the Optics and use of Zemax to create imaging mirrors for HUDs,
  • Assist in the Optical design of instrument cluster optical surfaces.
  • Assist in the design of display back-light units (BLUs)
  • Perform feasibility studies and write feasibility reports for OEMs
  • Write optical ray tracing script (ASAP) to ensure data imported to ray tracing software correctly.
  • Design Illumination Optics using SPEOS.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Physics or Optics Engineering
  • 10+ years of experience in development of optical components and products for the automotive industry
  • 5+ years of experience with design of Optical components in HUD (heads up display) units for the automotive industry.  Prior experience of writing and maintaining Zemax Macros for studies of the HUD optical system including creation of Concave surface.
  • 5+ years of experience as a mechanical engineer packaging HUD electronic components and assemblies into automotive products or related product
  • Zemax, SPEOS software preferred.
  • ProE Wildfire and Creo 2.0 preferred CAD systems.
  • Catia V4 or V5 is negotiable.
  • Team Center document management.
  • 3D CAD Surface Design knowledge
  • Geometric, Imaging, and Diffraction Optics, Diode Laser, Wavelength Stabilization, Dense Spectral Combining, Laser Scattering, Image knowledge required
  • Knowledge of operating, testing and maintaining optical equipment such as imaging colorimeters, spectrometers etc.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Intellectual property:
    • Patents relating to optics and lens development.
  • Must really love developing cool things to put into cars.
  • Structured goal and result orientated working style.
  • Strong communication skills. Good knowledge of spoken and written English.
  • Experience leading teams of engineers and working with cross-functional teams
  • Ability to work with cross-functional product development teams.
  • Participates in automotive & technology forums such as SAE and/or ITS.
  • Keep abreast of technology trends and provides advice on the adoption of technology for new products.
