Senior Android Software Engineers

Position Summary:


We have multiple full time openings for HMI and Application Framework with our Android team!

Analyze existing embedded software to add features, make modifications, fix bugs, and/or port to different platforms for in-vehicle infotainment systems.  This position creates applications and frameworks to support applications in the Android operating system.


Supervisory Responsibilities:  This position requires the supervision of indirect reports in global locations.


Essential Responsibilities may include: 


  • Work with cross-functional Customer and Harman HMI development teams in analyzing requirements and designing Human-Machine interfaces for Automotive Infotainment projects with on-time and high quality deliverables to multiple customers.
  • Work with global software development teams to develop new features, debug issues and write test cases for unit testing. Lead and/or participate in meetings between the Customer and Harman (both onsite and offsite resources) for design reviews and to track project status.
  • Lead communications on HMI software issues between Customer and Harman, including reporting and investigating the issue, identifying priorities, updating tracking and root cause documentation, etc.
  • Develop and track KPIs for each software releases to insure it meets the acceptance criteria.
  • Keep abreast of new technologies and methods for the purpose of recommending changes that will benefit current and future customer programs.
  • Applies intensive and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices in broad areas of assignments and related fields.
  • Working knowledge of software development tools (debugger’s, emulators, compilers, etc).
  • Learn and implement various protocols, especially binary protocols
  • Develop flexible well-designed APIs, including good documentation
  • Understands, demonstrates, and advocates Coding Style and Best Practices
  • Working knowledge of software development processes.
  • Working knowledge of embedded operating systems.
  • Analyze customer and internal requirements and specifications and translates these into architectural software designs.
  • Analyze existing embedded software performance to add features, make modifications, fix bugs, and/or port to different platforms.
  • Tests software designs and code at the unit and system level to ensure that all requirements are met and the highest software quality is achieved.
  • Participates in internal and customer driven design reviews throughout program.
  • Coordinates software development activities with the software team leader for each program
  • Identifies product requirement or performance issues.  Works with software team leader to negotiate resolution.
  • Communicate with peers inside the Harman group to coordinate software development.  This includes occasional travel for training or coordination with other groups.
  • Manages large projects and technical resources, including planning, estimating, and developing requirements in compliance with the established software development process.
  • Works with the customer to further define requirements and to resolve issues.
  • May direct the work of 2-3 other engineers.



Required Qualifications:


  • 5+ years professional work experience
  • 5 plus years of Java, C/C++, or other structured language.
  • Experience with HMI development using Android, HTML5, Flash/AIR, and/or Java platforms.
  • Experience developing and debugging Android software applications
  • Experience with Android Applications Framework highly desired
  • Experience developing and debugging software in a real-time, embedded environment.


Desired Experience:


  • Working knowledge of Android, QNX, and/or Linux operating systems.
  • 4+ years of C/C++ or Java programming experience.
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite tools (Photoshop, Illustrator).
  • Proven project experience in the Infotainment field
  • Understanding of State Machine diagram and UML diagrams.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.


Eligibility Requirements:


  • Willingness to travel less than 20% of the time.
  • Willingness to work in an office in Novi, MI. 
  • Willingness to submit to a background screen and a drug test.
