Position Summary:

Americas RFQ Principal Mechanical Design Architect will lead the conceptualization of mechanical designs architectures throughout the Request for Information / Request for Quote phase. They will help develop the design proposals based on familiarity with existing catalogs of components with a focus on performance, design, and cost compliance. Their work enables RFQ response preparations for Harman’s customers which are competitive and aligned with Harman Lifestyle Car Audio business targets.  They subsequently will kick off mechanical product development teams after awarding of business.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position does not have any direct or indirect reports.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Working within Harman’s global RFQ process, simultaneously architect multiple RFQ response project designs (speaker and amplifier) which involves working with cross-functional engineering teams
  • Analyze cost vs. performance tradeoffs
  • Perform product design reviews of existing components and proposals from the Best Cost Analytics team.
  • Create 3D models, assembly drawings and component drawings of product designs as required
  • Stay current on innovative manufacturing processes to facilitate optimal product design using DFA and/or Design for Assembly & Manufacturing methodology.
  • Prepare technical reports and presentations for the customer and internal use.
  • Investigate and analyze appropriate data to verify intent and compliance of design to customer and government specifications and requirements. 
  • Actively ensure that design improvement opportunities are appropriately adopted within new business pursuits.
  • Generate costed BOMs within FACTON in conjunction with Product Sourcing
  • Work with cross-functional teams within Product Development during RFQ process & ensure proper feasible concepts are handed off @ completion of RFQ/Business aware

Basic Qualifications:

  • Education:
    • BSME, BSMET r related engineering degree
    • Work experience beyond the minimum experience requirement may be an acceptable substitute for an engineering degree.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum 6 years experience in OEM automotive product design, including:
    • Experience in the design and engineering f audio products
    • Experience in the design and engineering f injection molded plastics
    • Experience in the design and engineering f die-cast metal components
  • Working Knowledge:
    • In-Depth understanding f the automotive product design and development process
    • Knowledge of the APQP process

 

Preferred Qualifications:

    • Use CATIA Version 5 (Revision 20 or higher) CAD software at a skilled level to develop product concepts and evaluate existing designs
    • CATIA V5 CAD design skills r equivalent in other CAD software
    • Proper drafting, dimensioning and tolerancing techniques, including GD&T.
    • Experience using Harman tools like ProductCenter, Teamcenter, and ODA
  • Advanced degree, e.g. MSME, MSMET r MBA.
  • Experience with the automotive OEM vehicle development process for OEMs such as Chrysler, Ford, GM, or Toyota
  • FACTON experience
  • Experience using analytical tools
  • Experience using MS Office s/w, especially Excel and PowerPoint

 

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Willingness to travel 10% of the time.
  • Willingness to work in an office in Novi
