Position Summary:

This position seeks a Princple Mechanical tool engineer professional to be responsible for component tool management for Mechanical Category within Procurement department. This role will manage tool supplier and cost management, Design for Manufacturing review with component supplier & engineering to ensure robustness in component tooling design and manufacturing process, tooling database (includes tool life, ownership, tool capacity), etc. The successful candidate will be the key point of contact for Mechanical component tool related activities and working closely with Category managers and Mechanical engineering to execute category strategies to support Harman’s business growth.




Job Responsibilities:

  • Identify and develop potential tooling vendors, generation of approved tooling supplier bid list
  • Validate the tooling cost proposal provided by the supplier for component development
  • Negotiate with suppliers to achieve optimized tool cost with reference to other programs to meet the project schedule in cohesion with Category Manager and Engineering.
  • Drive tooling VAVE and achieve cost reduction target
  • Support DFM review with nominated component supplier and Mechanical engineer to ensure the tooling and processes are robust. Suggest possible design modifications and manufacturing methods for easier and cost-efficient process
  • Follow up with supplier for tooling progress, tool capacity issues with reference to part volume forecast for new program launch readiness
  • Coordinates activities of tooling cost estimations
  • Negotiate with suppliers on tool modification cost driven by engineering design changes
  • Research solutions to technical problems and recommend cost effective resolution approaches.
  • Audit and assess suppliers’ existing tooling status, capacity, etc.
  • Input & maintain tooling database with latest information of supplier tooling assessment and ensure accuracy of the records
  • Manage tool life and capacity analysis to ensure sufficient capacities are in place to support customers’ demands
  • Supplier on-site support for tool related issues



Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering preferred
  • CAD experience. Tooling design/manufacturing process experience. Experience in tool fabrication preferred
  • Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, and computer-generated reports
  • Strong technical knowledge and skills in current technologies and applications
  • Relevant tooling supplier management experience in Plastic Injection Molding, Stamping, Die Casting, Forging
  • 5+ years of experience in quoting and negotiating tools
  • Ability to track budgets and project time
  • Exceptional analytical and organizational skills
  • Ability to learn quickly and prioritize appropriately to meet customer and company needs
  • Effective written, verbal and presentation communication skills.



Eligibility Requirements:

  • Willingness to travel up to 35% of the time.
  • Willingness to work in an office located in Novi, MI
