Position Summary:

A Distinguished Engineer has a strong record of creativity and innovation in software development and technology. This position is responsible for advancing engineering principles, theories, and concepts.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position has few or no direct reports, but mentoring and development of global engineers is required. A Distringuished Engineer will proactively coach technical talent on technical and career possibilities, and mentor engineers within the division on their respective technical field of expertise. A Distinguished Engineer is a talent ambassador who seeks new talent in the external market place and has an internal reputation as a technical mentor and guide.

 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Lead advanced technology development including proofs of concept, demonstrators and platforms
  • Lead R&D initiatives with divisional business impact
  • Actively engages with business units to understand and develop solutions to emerging business needs
  • Leverage business and customer relationships to maximize potential return of R&D projects
  • Lead Technology transfer of R&D projects to divisions
  • Divisional liaising to synergize R&D projects
  • Lead technology roadmap alignment and influence through divisional interfacing and external technology provider influencing
  • Lead new business development through research, patents and initiatives
  • Lead collaboration with research institutes, suppliers, partners, and universities to meet HARMAN’s long-term strategic technical needs
  • Contribute to alliances and standards development organizations and consortia
  • Contribute to the development of patented technologies or platforms
  • Mentor engineers within division on technical field of expertise
  • Utilize engineering expertise as necessary to drive R&D projects to completion
  • Participate on HARMAN Patent Committee

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • PhD degree in Engineering or related field and 12 years of experience in corporate or academic research; alternatively, Master’s Degree in above mentioned fields and 16 years of experience in research and development or Bachelor’s Degree and 20 years’ experience
  • Company recognized expert in one or more technical areas
  • Compelling contributions to a technology area through new technology developments and research
  • Proven technical leadership
  • Key influencer in new product or service development and demonstrated experience launching in collaboration with business or partner
  • Proven expertise developing complex systems from architecture to implementation
  • Demonstrated expertise with wired and wireless network protocols
  • Demonstrated expertise in system architecture and design
  • Demonstrated ability for debugging hardware and software, embedded and real time systems using traditional test equipment, e.g., oscilloscopes, logic analyzers
  • Proven ability to lead diverse teams with little to no supervision
  • Proven ability to mentor

 

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Willingness to travel 10% of the time.
  • Willingness to work in an office in Novi, MI
