Position Summary:  The CoC User Experience Group is seeking a Display Engineer (HUD) for a position to work under the leadership of Sr. Director of CoC User Experience. We are a fast paced, start-up-feel group of talented inventors, engineers, researchers, and designers located in Novi, reporting directly into the Connected Car Division. The team aims to be the most forward-thinking group in the company, and is focused on leveraging future User Experiences (UX), connecting the dots between cutting edge technologies and deep research, and rapid end-to-end prototyping, and bringing that into products. Every day, we challenge ourselves to turn Science Fiction into reality. This role would be SME (Subject matter expert) and Lead Design Engineer for AR Head-Up Display (HUD) within Harman and strongly influence the product roadmap definition.


Job Responsibilities:

  • Design AR  HUD plastics and optics that efficiently utilize space in vehicle to obtain the best image possible and meeting the specified requirements.
  • Design components include aspheric/flat mirrors, anti-reflective/hard coatings, polarized components, TFTs, heat sinks, plastics, prisms, and more.
  • Solve packaging issues related to AR HUD to meet the requirements.
  • Responsible for leading the development of the mechanical packaging for automotive AR HUD in particular aspheric/flat mirrors, anti-reflective/hard coatings, polarized components, TFTs, heat sinks, plastics, prisms,
  • Lead and analyze all packaging feasibility and performs thermal simulation, vibration, and shock analysis as required to ensure design meets product specification.
  • Release and maintain controlled documents as required.
  • Knowledge of operating , testing  and maintaining optical equipment such as imaging colorimeters, spectrometers, etc.
  • Responsible for ensuring product meets customer and internal requirements, specifications and cost targets.
  • Provide preprogram support with quick turn designs/samples and technical documentation as required.
  • Prepare documents and reports with cross functional teams for engineering and program management along with participating in design reviews with customers and engineering peers.
  • Manage product timelines to meet overall project goals.
  • Update & Release BOM's using Harman's configuration management & PLM systems.
  • Manage the development program documentation, PPAP’s, and FMEA's.
  • Lead HUD realization of customer requirements and specifications (RFC, RFI, RFQ), product test plans, and production QA processes as needed to ensure the development and manufacture of quality products.
  • Technical support for the industrialization of functional items in an international environment.
  • Oversee the product conformance testing for environmental performance to automotive and customer requirements.


Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering

  • 5 years of experience as a mechanical engineer packaging HUD electronic components and assemblies into automotive products or related product

  • Experience leading teams of engineers and working with cross functional teams

  • ProE Wildfire and Creo 2.0 preferred CAD systems.

  • Catia V4 or V5 is negotiable.

  • ANSYS, ProMechanica, Flowtherm or IcePack FEA software preferred.

  • Team Center document management.

  • GD&T, APQP, Tolerance Stackup Analysis, Vibration system fundamentals, Statistical Analysis, Design of Experiments and Design for Failure Modes Effect Analysis knowledge required

  • Deep experience with Plastic/ Glass Lens Development for automotive product:

    o IML (In-mold laminated process)

    o IMD + IML 3D Lens combinations

    ·         2 film molding

    o Optical lens quality

  • Leading development of the above and combinations of the above in the following technologies:

    o In-mold laminated films

    o Secondary process operations.

    o High pressure forming (HPF) and thermoforming capabilities 

  • Experience with the tooling Development:

    o    Effects of injection compression on molded in stress (birefringence)

    o    Material types and properties affecting optical quality (films and resins)

    o    Effects of dynamic mold temperature cycling on molded in stress (birefringence)

    o    Designed the tooling as well as the part. Extensive knowledge and experience on all injection molding processes and quality requirements to deliver a high quality lens


Preferred qualifications:

  • Intellectual property:
    • Patents relating to mechanical design and lens development. Some are related to actual part design, others material usage and more also on tooling and process development..
  • Must really love developing cool things to put into cars.
  • Ability to develop test software in C/C++ is desirable.
  • Structured goal and result orientated working style.
  • Strong communication skills. Good knowledge in spoken and written English.
  • Ability to work with cross functional product development teams.
  • Participates in automotive & technology forums such as SAE and/or ITS.
  • Keep abreast of technology trends and provides advice on the adoption of technology for new products.

  • Willingness to travel 10%.
  • Willingness to work in the Novi, MI office.
