Position Summary:  The CoC User Experience Group is seeking a Director of Engineering for a position to work under the leadership of Sr. Director of CoC User Experience. We are a fast paced, start-up-feel group of talented inventors, engineers, researchers, and designers, reporting directly into the Connected Car Division. The team aims to be the most forward-thinking group in the company, and is focused on leveraging future User Experiences (UX) and Displays, connecting the dots between cutting edge technologies and deep research, and rapid end-to-end prototyping, and bringing that into products. Every day, we challenge ourselves to turn Science Fiction into reality. This role would be be accountable for the direction and management of the engineering organization and strongly influencing the timely and high quality product delivery, coordinating globally with each region to insure operations are consistent.


Job Responsibilities:

  • As a member of the leadership team, represent the engineering discipline in the corporate management decision making process covering advanced displays, advanced interfaces ( hactics, gestures, touch, cameras), HUDs, system design, electrical design and mechanical design integration, HMI.
  • Be a subject-matter expert and main contact in the area of displays, advanced interfaces, cameras, HMI, to  solve complex technical problems in advanced engineering and production projects.
  • Accountable for high level of engineering investigation and fact finding to fulfill the company's need for technological excellence and future leadership position in the automotive industry in the area of displays and user experience.
  • Lead communications with customer engineering teams to understand display requirements, direct the customers’ technical direction and to build confidence in Harman’s products and product delivery capabilities.
  • Ownership of communicating customer technical requirements within the Harman Product Management and peer Engineering organizations and interface with multiple groups within to ensure customers’ product expectations are being met.
  • Lead a team of engineers that work closely with customer business units and RFQ teams to support the creation of proposals in response to RFIs, RFQ’s and RFPs for displays and user experience products.
  • Responsible for realization of customer requirements and specifications (RFC, RFI, RFQ), product test plans, and production QA processes as needed to ensure the development and manufacture of quality products.
  • Work closely with peer customer engineering teams to understand requirements, influence the customers’ technical direction and to build confidence in Harman’s products and product delivery capabilities.
  • Establish a position of expertise in displays and user experience technologies,  that is recognized in the organization and across the industry. Utilize this strength to engage and present at industry forums.
  • Perform feasibility studies and write feasibility reports for OEMs
  • Responsible for ensuring product meets customer and internal requirements, specifications and cost targets.
  • Provide preprogram support with quick turn designs/samples and technical documentation as required.
  • Prepare documents and reports with cross functional teams for peer engineering and program management along with participating in design reviews with customers and engineering peers. Manage product timelines to meet overall project goals.
  • Support cross-functional teams and projects on displays, advance interfaces, HUDs, and user experience.  


Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering, Materials Science Engineering, Physics or Optics Engineering
  • The candidate should have deep understanding in following technical areas,
    • Displays panel engineering,
    • Mechanical engineering packaging display electronic components and assemblies
    • Display Optics
    • Electrical Engineering
    • System Design
    • Best practice system development methods
    • Formal process of system development
  • The candidate should have the following required experience
    • 15+ years of system development experience and a deep understanding of the advantage of global fooprint as well as global capability of an engineering orgnization.
    • At least  8 years of  management experience.
  • Knowledge of  managing optics lab with past experience of operating , testing  and maintaining optical equipment such as imaging colorimeters, spectrometers etc;


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Intellectual property:
    • Patents relating to displays, optics and lens development.
  • Must really love developing cool things to put into cars.
  • Ability to develop test software in C/C++ is desirable.
  • Structured goal and result orientated working style.
  • Strong communication skills. Good knowledge in spoken and written English.
  • Ability to work with cross functional product development teams.
  • Participates in automotive & technology forums such as SAE and/or ITS.
  • Keep abreast of technology trends and provides advice on the adoption of technology for new products.
