This position has no direct supervisory responsibility.


Position Summary:

This Principal Hardware Engineer position is a technical position that will have exposures to both internal engineering team, and external partner company engineering team. The successful candidate will be collaborating with leading technology partners to develop state-of-the-art technologies and products ranging from AI speakers, networked home audio products to voice enabled headphones. The key responsibilities will include the following:

  • Serve as a HW system engineer in our west coast R&D center and the most senior technical staff to lead/coach the remote project team in solving complex design challenges to achieve quality and performance objectives within committed schedule
  • Work with technology partners to assess project execution risk due to resource constraints or design complexity and technology feasibility, and devise plan to collaborate very closely with business development team, product and marketing managers and technology partners to validate next-generation technology and system platform
  • Guide and supervise the work carried out by the project team, and ensure product quality to meet Harman standards and requirements, Harman design structure standards, and rules in project execution.


Basic Qualifications:

  • PhD degree in Engineering or related field and 5 years of experience in corporate or academic research; alternatively, Master’s Degree in above mentioned fields and 8 years of experience in research and development or Bachelor’s Degree and 12 years’ experience
  • Experienced in managing multi-site (remote) projects with technology partners / suppliers and ODMs
  • Ability to influence internal HW development community on system platform choice and key component selection 
  • Direct working experience with world-class technology providers
  • SoC experience with applications in (wireless) audio
  • Demonstrate complex problem-solving skill and cost-driven innovation on HW system design;
  • Effective (English) communication skills


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficient in hardware design tools, schematics and layout. Hands on experience of electronics measurement and test devices (such as logic and network analyzers) and related data analysis, simulation and synthesis tools. Understanding EMI/EMC test procedure and requirement.
  • Hands-on experience on embedded software development tools to perform system debug on Linux and/or Android platform.
  • Accumulated experiences in electronics device diagnostic and simulation tools for performance analysis and improvement.
  • Good understanding of networked audio hardware and software system architecture.
  • Analog and mixed signal hardware design experience is a plus
  • Knowledge of digital filter design, systems level simulation and psychoacoustics is a plus
  • Results driven, be accountable and deliver on commitments.
  • Demonstrate complex problem-solving skill, being resourceful and an attitude to win.
