Position Summary

The Future Experience (FX) Team at HARMAN is looking for a Distinguished Engineer of Future Experience and Prototyping to join our world class team. We are a fast paced, start-up-feel group of talented inventors, engineers, researchers, and designers. We are located in Mountain View, California, minutes away from Google, Samsung, the NASA Ames campus, Singularity University, and many other companies right in the heart of Silicon Valley. Reporting directly to the CTO of HARMAN, the FX team aims to be the most forward-thinking group in the company, and is focused on creating future product opportunities based on advanced interaction methods, connecting the dots between cutting edge technologies and deep research, and rapid end-to-end prototyping.   • Supervision of teams across a matrix organization as well as interaction with suppliers and contractors

 

Job Responsibilities

  • Conceive, develop, lead, and execute R&D and Innovation projects in the HCI (human-computer interaction) domain, preparing for future generations of audio and electronic products across all divisions of HARMAN, from automotive, to consumer electronics, to audio.
  • Manage and execute technology development projects of significant size: create project plans and socialize them with stakeholders across the company, contract and negotiate external resources, track and correct project progress.
  • Lead efforts to envision, design, and build fully working systems of future interaction methods and novel use cases that demonstrate future products with radically new user experiences.
  • Interface and collaborate with internal R&D groups and external contractors, vendors, and project partners.
  • Solve tough software, hardware, and systems engineering problems in ill-defined and unexplored domains.
  • Drive breakthrough ideas, world-class research, and gained technologies (systems, hardware, software) into all product organizations of HARMAN, maintaining a steady flow of projects, intellectual property, and potential products using existing and to-be-devoped processes and pipelines.
  • Contribute to HARMAN’s strong drive to be on the cutting edge of global technology through the generation of internationally patentable ideas; write and review invention disclosures.
  • Contribute to strategic roadmaps with an HCI perspective by providing HARMAN with novel HCI visions and concepts that impact future products, evangelizing and providing thought leadership in the domain.
  • Conduct technology evaluation of software and hardware tools, component technologies, and systems.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. degree in Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Robotics, or closely related domains; alternatively, Master’s degree in the above domains, plus 4 years of relevant industry experience.
  • On top of the above, another 6+ years of relevant work experience in the engineering domain of large automotive companies, or dominant technology companies such as Apple, Google, Microsoft, Amazon. etc.
  • Deep engineering, business development, and ecosystem expertise in at least one of the following fields: automotive user interfaces, augmented reality, haptics, affective computing, mechatronics, brain-computer interfaces.
  • Exceptional reputation as an innovator based on having worked on cutting edge research and development projects, and being regarded as one of the global thought leaders in their specific domain.
  • Excellent coding skills on various platforms such as C/C++, Objective C, Java, Max/MSP, Processing, and related software platforms.
  • Good amount of engineering and interaction design experience with a variety of non-traditional input and output technologies of HCI, such as speech, audio, gesture, touch, haptics, proprioceptive interfaces, neural and brain interfaces, etc.
  • Experience with the use of rapid prototyping tools for software and hardware (SDKs, dev kits), for electronics, and for mechanical design processes.
  • Excellent in communicating advanced concepts and technologies persuasively and concisely to all levels of the company and other businesses.

  • Highly creative technologist with a wide range of interests, going beyond traditional devices and platforms.
  • Generalist engineer with a “builder mentality,” continuously creating demos to improve prototypes of new interaction techniques.
  • Track record of having released software, hardware, or other products to the market based on their original engineering work.
  • Good knowledge of digital signal processing (DSP) tools and techniques, in particular audio processing, computer vision, and sensor processing systems.
  • Good scientific understanding of auditory and visual perception, proprioception and haptics, and neuroscience.
  • Being able to connect the dots of research and emerging technologies resulting in disruptive products.
  • Aptitude for quickly learning and using any new tools and development kits outside their existing skill set.

  • Willingness to travel 25% of the time.
