Position Summary:

HARMAN’s diverse portfolio of businesses and customers offer interns a great opportunity to gain exposure to a wide range of projects and practices. As a member of our team, your primary role will be to contribute your engineering expertise to turn concepts of future user experience into a working prototype. You will be joining the Future Experience (FX) Team at HARMAN. We are a fast paced, start-up-feel group of talented inventors, engineers, researchers, and designers. We are located in Mountain View, California, minutes away from Google, Samsung, the NASA campus, and many others right in the heart of Silicon Valley. Reporting directly to the CTO of Harman, the team aims to be the most forward-thinking group in the company, and is focused on Future User Experiences (UX) and Artificial Intelligence, connecting the dots between cutting edge technologies and deep research, and rapid end-to-end prototyping. This internship is about exploring the interaction that fully autonomous vehicles will have with pedestrians. You will work closely with the FX Team to research and design an area of focus that addresses the problem of a lacking communication between pedestrians and upcoming autonomous vehicles. The outcome of this internship will be a working experience prototype that is capable of demonstrating the solution you’ve chosen from the investigation and downselection portion of the internship.

 

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Consume cutting edge research in this domain, including the FX Team’s invention portfolio
  2. Work with the FX Team to downselect and design the area of focus, and specifically the implementation you will pursue for your prototype
  3. Research, source, evaluate, and down select hardware and software methods and technologies that enable your specific implementation of car to pedestrian communication
  4. Implement and integrate the system into the vehicle
  5. Test, validate, and iterate on the prototype system

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • Must be currently enrolled in a Bachelor's Degree program in Sophomore year or later, or graduate/Ph.D. program at an accredited institution taking at least one class in the semester prior to the internship program and returning to school for at least one semester upon completion of the internship program
  • Degree must be in related area of work with courses in Computer Science, Engineering, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Human Factors, Cognitive Psychology, or any related field
  • Experience conducting research within the field of HCI
  • Hardware prototyping experience; interfacing with common prototyping technologies such as: sensors, microcontrollers, etc.
  • Proficiency with a relevant software language such as C/C++, python, etc.
  • Previous entry level work experience strongly preferred
  • Must have strong oral and written communication skills and be able to confidently interact and present information to senior leaders
  • Must work collaboratively with strong interpersonal and relationship building skills
  • Must provide work availability from May 31, 2018 - August 12, 2018 and be able to work 40 hours per week
  • Strongly prefer candidates who live within a commutable distance
  • Must provide own housing and transportation to/from work
  • Must provide proper work authorization

 

Preferred Qualifications & Desired Competencies:

  • Graduate level research in one or more domains relevant to this project or, in lieu of graduate level research, significant course-related project experience with direct overlap with the proposed internship project
  • Domain experience in the field of autonomous vehicles
  • Strong automotive prototyping background and portfolio
  • Experience interfacing with and interpreting sensor data in the context of autonomous vehicles (e.g., external cameras, LiDAR, radar, etc.)
  • Experience with one or more of the following: audio/visual signaling systems, LED lighting arrays, projection mapping, directional speakers, whole-body gesture recognition
  • Experience in user-centered design process (preferably in the automotive context)
