Out of Office, Fully On: How HARMAN Employees Prepare for a Worry-Free PTO

At HARMAN, time off is part of how we do our best work. Whether you're in India, the US, or any of our global offices, we believe stepping away fully helps you return refreshed, recharged, and ready to contribute at a higher level.

Turning “Out of Office" Into a Strategy

But truly unplugging takes more than a plane ticket and an autoreply. It requires a solid strategy — one built on PTO preparation tips, clear communication, and trust, values central to HARMAN worldwide. Everyone prepares for PTO differently, but the most effective approaches share a few key elements:

1. Clear communication with teams and stakeholders across HARMAN locations

2. Thoughtful handovers that enable smooth continuity

3. A commitment to disconnect — in whatever way works for you

From Bangalore to Chennai to our offices in Europe, HARMAN employees embrace these principles. We asked a few team members from various locations to share their go-to rituals before heading out. While everyone's routine looks a little different, the goal is always the same: to log off with confidence, knowing everything is in good hands.

Planning Ahead to Power Down

For some, PTO preparation is a project in itself and that's a good thing. Laura, a Manager and HR Business Partner based in Romania location, takes PTO prep seriously. Her “Great Escape Plan" is part checklist, part ritual, and entirely effective.

She starts by announcing her time off early not just to her manager, but across team chats and calendars. A week out, she scans her meetings, cancels what she can, and prepares detailed handovers for anything that can't wait. “I want to make sure nothing explodes while I'm sipping coconut water," Laura jokes. That includes crafting an out-of-office reply that's equal parts informative and fun. Her rule? Leave the laptop (and the guilt) behind.

For Laura, this level of PTO preparation isn't just about peace of mind. It creates clarity and trust, setting the tone for how work continues in her absence — a value that reflects the spirit of HARMAN and all roles across our company locations.

Relying on and Trusting the Team

Where Laura thrives on structure, Daniel, a Senior Test Engineer in one of the HARMAN manufacturing locations, takes a lean, collaborative approach. His focus is on strategic handoff: first aligning with his manager on backups, then syncing directly with teammates to ensure coverage.

He also loops in cross-functional partners across various offices to adjust deliverables or timelines as needed. It's a reminder that stepping away is easier when everyone's aligned and when your team has your back.

Finding Balance Between Work and Rest

Emma, a Senior Software Manager, offered a more candid take. For her, the line between work and rest can get blurry. That is a common challenge for high performers. “No matter how much I prepare — finishing tasks, training a backfill, planning ahead — there's always a good idea that comes to me while I'm on vacation," she admits.

Still, Emma sees value in the preparation. And dreaming of her next vacation spot helps her stay balanced. “Maybe I should move my office between two palm trees," she says laughing.

Blocking Off the Return

Taking PTO is one thing, returning from it is another. Brianna, who leads Talent Marketing team plans her time off with both departure and re-entry in mind.

She starts with a pre-vacation checklist, sends out project updates, and clearly communicates that she'll be fully offline. But her secret to a smooth return? Blocking off her first day back — no meetings, just catch-up. “I work with an amazing team I trust completely," she says. “They've got things covered while I'm away."

Resetting in Nature

Sometimes, the best way to disconnect is to go where work can't follow. That's Nishu's approach. A Software Engineer, she clears her inbox, sets up her out-of-office, and then heads to the hills — literally. “Time off isn't time lost," she says. “It's fuel for new ideas."

Her go-to ritual? Hiking to places with no signal and plenty of sky. Reconnecting with nature helps her return with fresh energy and perspective.

At HARMAN, We Mean It When We Say “Take the Time"

Time off isn't a gap in productivity — it's a driver of it. Whether you're trekking through mountains or enjoying a quiet staycation, stepping away resets your brain and recharges your creativity. And when teams support each other through these moments, PTO becomes a practice in resilience, not disruption.

Encouraging time off isn't just a perk, but a shared value. We know that well-rested people do their best work. And when the team has your back, you can unplug without hesitation. So, whether you're going off the grid, staying close to home, or seriously considering that two-palm-tree office setup, we hope you take the time and make it count.
